Heritage museums, historical sites host 21m visitors

TEHRAN – Iran’s heritage museums and historical sites have so far attracted some 21 million visitors during the current Iranian calendar year, which ends on March 20, IRNA reported.

“There are 660 museums in Iran, of which 330 are affiliated with the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization,” said Mohammadreza Kargar who presides over CHHTO’s Museums and Historical Moveable Properties Office.

Embracing 150 museums, Tehran province is forerunner in the country, followed by Khorasan Razavi province which has 90 museums, the official added.

During the current year, the Islamic Republic hosted some loan exhibits including a landmark Louvre show, which were highly welcomed by people from all walks of life.

“A total of 104,047 people explored the Louvre show from March 5 to April 2, which is a stunning figure …. We had estimated to have some 100,000 visitors over the course of three months,” Jebreil Nokandeh, the director of the National Museum of Iran, said in May.
